Scorpion on a Stick - Wangfujing Street Market

Down a small alley, decorated with typical chinese red lanterns and temple-style archways lies Wangfujing Market. Through the hussle and bustle of tourists, venders and all sorts of creepy crawlies we spotted some bizarre grub.

Rob at the entrance with the red lanterns.

Skewers with live scorpions, from little ones to massive fat black ones, wriggling around whenever someone walked past. Poor things, just kill them before you stake them. Other delicacies included centipedes, cicada pupae, starfish, seahorses, tarantulas and a host of other creepy crawlies that should send you running, not induce hunger!

Fat ones, juicy ones, small ones, skinny ones...

Centipedes and Cicadas for your enjoyment!
How about some Tarantulas to tantalize your tastebuds?
Some dishes were divine - fresh fruit on skewers, some Korean familiars like mandu (dumplings), kimbap (maki - kinda), Tokbokki (rice cake noodles in hot sauce) and other delicious things. Lamb Kebabs were one of the old favourites - but expensive as hell. Clearly this is aimed at tousits, and everything was over-priced. Although Rob managed to haggle down the beer prices and an awesome 'Maobama' - Obama/Mao t-shirt, good man.
Maobama!

Moving away from the familiar foods, we saw more strange sights - snakes (poor snakes!), roast ducklings (damn they looked good), octopus tenticles, lizards and other beautiful creatures I much prefer seeing, not eaten deep-fried on a skewer. All in all, an interesting experience.

Look at their limp little heads begging for freedom!
