Viva Mexico Cabrones!!!

So we arrived back from Tequila, stopped at our local bar around the corner from where we were staying, had a beer and phoned Makako to let him know we were back. In the background we could hear the music playing and it sounded like a good party. We didn't want to interrupt so we said not to worry we would see him later, but he would have none of that! He insisted on picking us up and taking us to a real Mexican party! Soon afterwards he arrived in his pick-up with a lovely lady with him named Consuelo. We packed up our belongings and chucked them in the back of his pick-up.

We drove for a while to the other side of town and decided to head straight for the party instead of dropping our bags off first. We arrived at the party and there were tables with people sitting everywhere and lots of kids playing by the karaoke machine and singing and dancing. We felt a little awkward at first but everyone was friendly and welcomed us. Then we met the Birthday Boy (Fernando) - so excited to see us, he told us not to leave until after the Mariachi had played and brought us some nice tequila cocktails.

As I said we were a little conscientious at first as we were the odd ones out, with everyone knowing each other and all that. So we sat with Makako and Consuelo and chatted for a while... Then the proper Mexican style music came on. Eieieiei Arrriiiiiiiiiiiiba! The sweetest Mexican cheer squeaked out of Consuelo, grinning from ear to ear. It 'was her song' so her and Makako jumped up to dance. They asked us to join them, Chrissie said she did but wasn't good enough and I went on to explain that I was born with a rare birth defect called having two left feet. Off they went, dancing with full enthusiasm. While they were dancing Makakos' brother came up to Chrissie and asked if she wanted to dance, so she went for a twirl. Shortly after Consuelo took me to dance and proved to everyone in the party that I had in fact not being lying and really did have two left feet! But this turned out to be a great ice breaker - everyone now started chatting with us and asking where we were from and why were we in Mexico etc.

This was so funny! Apparently there is a traditional dance where the man acts like an old man, hobbling along. He then takes off his 'mask' and becomes a handsome man....or something like that. Makako the old man! Haha
From here on in the party was absolutely amazing! Popular songs from the 80's came on - Don't tell my heart, my achey-breaky heart...in Spanish! Almost everyone jumped up to line dance! Chrissie joined, breaking it down. From then on the booze was flowing and the 'dance-offs' were progressing, with Consuelo taunting the men with her sexy salsa moves, getting hilarious responses as the men jiggled back! All the girls were teaching Chrissie to salsa, all the men were chatting with me dancing and singing full of heart. We were no longer outsiders and were fully integrated in the party.

So we danced and chatted and shared drinks for a while. We went to sit down and relax a little when suddenly a group of Mexican men dressed in their formal attire came in bearing their instruments and playing very lively Mariachi music, this was when the party really got into full swing!

They played their music and everyone went to the dance floor. Everyone was hugging Fernando, singing their lungs out. All songs were traditional love songs, and you could really understand and feel the music through the passionate singing. One song was along the lines of 'you must kill her with love'. At one point all violinists surrounded Fernando and his girlfriend slow dancing, ah how romantic! It was really sweet. We are so thankful for Makako for being such a wonderful host and giving us the opportunity to experience this amazing party and the wonderful people.
